Carrie Williams began her diary in November 1858 in Gold Flat, Nevada County and wrote in it regularly for six months with sporadic entries thereafter. Her entries describe in detail her days spent doing chores about the house, taking in sewing, and caring for her son. Leisure activities, including visiting with neighbors and family, reading, an Odd Fellows ball, a Sunday school pageant, and holiday celebrations, are also described. Williams also mentions attending meetings of the local Temperance Society. Carrie's husband, Wallace, worked as a miner and spent most evenings playing the cornet in the Union Brass Band.
